Attempted Car Jack?

Last night Rachel came to pick me up from work at about 10:15. Our route home is to drive straight for a mile on the same road in the same lane, make one left hand turn, and then we're there a block later. In other words, there aren't really any opportunities to cut anyone off. On the way home, Rachel, who was driving, signaled left and got into the left-hand turn lane to make that single left hand turn. As she did, the car that had been in the same lane a little ways behind us pulled up next to us and stopped in the middle of their lane to look over at us. There were two men who looked over at us, then nodded in agreement at something one of them said.

Rachel turned and they followed us. We came to a stop sign and they pulled up to the left of us and motioned for Rachel to roll down her window. The driver said, quite calmly, "Did you know you cut me off back there?" We responded, "Really, didn't realize that, sorry," and I started wondering how we could have possibly cut them off, since we had been driving straight in a single lane for a mile. Unless he had been driving in the left hand turn lane silently with his lights off in Rachel's blind spot the entire time and had decided not to honk when Rachel pulled over to turn, there's no possible way we could have cut him off. And we all know that there's no such thing as an LA driver who "decides not to honk".

The driver continued, "We need to get out and check for damages." I responded, "We didn't hit you." He said, "It was really close..." We apologized again. At that, another car came to the intersection. The driver and his passenger both got a little nervous, turned left, and sped away without another word.

It seems a bit odd to me because 1.) There was no way we could have cut them off, B.) If we had cut them off and they were upset enough to follow us, the driver would not have been nearly so calm and indifferent when he told us we had cut him off, C.) If they were mad, the sight of a pregnant woman and my scrawny self would not have been enough to scare away two full-grown men. 4.) We obviously hadn't hit them, so it's odd that they wanted us to get out and look for damages with them.

The more I think about it, the more I think that they were trying to dupe us out of our car, and when they realized it wasn't going to be effective, they decided to leave... Regardless of any bad intentions they may have had, I'm just glad I was there when it happened instead of Rachel being all alone!
